The International Seminar (IS) will take place from September 7-8, 2011. It is the Pre-Conference with international guests, where hot and critical issues for schools and school leadership in different countries will be presented and discussed. Information about the Swiss school systems will be provided. Moreover, the participants will visit schools of Central Switzerland.

The Main Conference from September 8-10, 2011 focuses on Networked Systems and System Leadership as Learning Communities. In the keynote speeches, symposia, and workshops current challenges in the fields of school effectiveness, school improvement, and school management will be discussed. The core idea is to share ideas, knowledge, and experiences.

‚Networked systems‘ (in German: Kooperative Bildungslandschaften) are characterized by a concept that aims to link institutions of education more closely and increase cross-institutional cooperation, thus providing better and more varied chances for the education of children and youths.

In these networked systems, on the one hand ‘vertical’ cooperation is realized among the relevant institutions for the sake of supporting the children’s smooth transition from kindergarden/pre-school to primary school and from there to secondary and vocational schooling. On the other hand, ‘horizontal’ cooperation in terms of ‘opening’ the institutions of education in the municipality is essential, since for supporting a solid development of the young people’s personalities and imparting social competencies to them, it is necessary that all actors involved cooperate: schools, youth welfare services, youth associations, sports clubs, etc.

For the School Leadership Symposium 2011, it is a pleasure to welcome participants from various countries. Numerous speakers and presenters will provide revealing information and lead interesting discussions.

Around the Symposium’s sessions, there will be a rich offer of cultural and social activities. Additionally, there are the fantastic landscape and the cultural centres of Central Switzerland, with places to see from A as in the “Alps”, e.g. the nearby Rigi mountain with its gorgeous view L as in “Lucerne” with the Music Festival at the beginning of September, and Lake Lucerne (Vierwaldstättersee) with the „Rütliwiese“, where historically Switzerland was founded, to Z as in “Zurich”, the business city with its international atmosphere.

The conference language is English. The IS will be entirely in English. At the SLS, simultaneous interpretation will be provided for the keynote speeches that are given in German.
