The International Seminar 2005 (IS) "The Professionalisation of School Leadership" looks at the central role of school leadership for developing and assuring the quality of schools.
The target groups of IS are experts, key persons and education leaders: We expect representatives of school and educational authorities, training centres, ministries, as well as academics working in the fields of school effectiveness, school improvement and school leadership, but also school leaders and teachers interested in school management.
The aim of the International Seminar 2005 is to discuss recent topics and emerging issues in the field of school leadership development (professionalisation), and to establish and support professional links and networks.
The whole area of professionalisation of school leaders has become a central theme for various groups of people (i.e. for educational policy makers, for those who are responsible or have to implement certain aspects, but also for academics conducting research in this field).
First, the participants reflect on and discuss insights from recent research findings and their consequences for the leadership of schools. Then, they look at the growing importance placed on activities to prepare school leaders, which have resulted in designing and implementing modified development programs. Moreover, other related issues will be discussed. For instance, we look at the growing importance placed on activities to recruit and select school leaders.
Finally, the seminar will also provide opportunities to share ideas for future cooperation: those of us who provide training and development or assess principals can think of how they could share their experiences or material to enrich their own work; those of us who conduct research in these fields can agree on a shared research project, and develop ideas to get funding for it (e.g. from the EU); those of us who are school leaders can start a helpful exchange of experiences in an international network. According to the participants' needs, we will facilitate appropriate workshops and exchange forums.
Basically, the topics will be dealt with in keynote presentations, plenary discussions, and workshops. The core idea is to share ideas, knowledge, and experiences, but also to develop potential network possibilities in the fields of school leadership, leadership training and development, or leadership assessment.
There will also be the opportunity for some sightseeing, as the region was the home of Martin Luther, Johann Sebastian Bach, and the poets of the German classical period, J.W. Goethe and F. Schiller. Besides medieval Erfurt itself, the famous town of Weimar will be visited.
